Southgate "England need to get better" - 12 Oct

Aston Villa's Gareth Southgate believes England need to step up a gear if are to be a Euro 2000 force to be reckoned with.

England made the play-offs by the skin of their teeth as Poland failed to get the draw or win they needed against high-flying Sweden in Stockholm.

The Poles fell to a 2-0 defeat in a nail-biting match for all of England. Villa and England defender Southgate said: ``Saturday's life-line was a huge boost to us but the job is far from done. ``There is a lot of euphoria at the moment but I think there is a lot more to come from us.

``We would want to play better in the play-offs. We would want to play better than we have up until now for Kevin Keegan. Everybody is keen to improve their performance. ``But if we play to our ability there's no reason why we can't beat any of the sides in the play-offs. It's really about what we do.''
